about

Dante's Inferno, widely hailed as one of the great classics of Western literature, details Dante's journey through the nine circles of Hell. The voyage begins during Easter week in the year 1300, the descent through Hell starting on Good Friday. After meeting his guide, the eminent Roman poet Virgil, in a mythical dark wood, the two poets begin their descent through a baleful world of doleful shades, horrifying tortures, and unending lamentation. During their journey, Dante and Virgil meet a series of diabolical and demonic figures that characterize, in a highly expressionistic way, the
various stages of the descent that will lead them to the end of the journey.

Here at Eighth Tower Records, we invited a group of musicians (Robin Storey, Raffaele Pezzella a.k.a. Sonologyst, Samuel Goff, Gianluca Becuzzi, Daniel Barbiero, Cristiano Bocci, Cobi van Tonder, Mario Lino Stancati, Pär Boström, Lars Bröndum, Dead Space Chamber Music), interested to hear what those demonic (and of course allegoric) figures from the Dante's poem would inspire to them.

Track list and verses:

Lars Bröndum - LO MINOTAURO
(Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden. 2020)

vid’io lo Minotauro far cotale;
e quello accorto gridò: «Corri al varco:
mentre ch’e’ ’nfuria, è buon che tu ti cale».

Inferno, Canto XII, vers. 19-27

Sonologyst & Rapoon - Pape Satàn, pape Satàn aleppe
(Recorded in Naples, Italy / Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. 2020)

«Pape Satàn, pape Satàn aleppe!»,
cominciò Pluto con la voce chioccia;
e quel savio gentil, che tutto seppe,
disse per confortarmi: «Non ti noccia
la tua paura; ché, poder ch’elli abbia,
non ci torrà lo scender questa roccia».

Inferno, Canto VII, vers. 1-6

Dead Space Chamber Music - Lo ’mperador del doloroso regno
(Recorded in Bristol, UK. 2020)

Lo ’mperador del doloroso regno
da mezzo ’l petto uscìa fuor de la ghiaccia;
vedi oggimai quant’esser dee quel tutto

Inferno, Canto XXXIV, vers. 28-36

Kammarheit - Caron, occhi di bragia
(Recorded in Umeå, Sweden. 2020)

Ed ecco verso noi venir per nave
un vecchio, bianco per antico pelo,
gridando: «Guai a voi, anime prave!
Non isperate mai veder lo cielo:
i’ vegno per menarvi a l’altra riva
ne le tenebre etterne, in caldo e ’n gelo.

Inferno, Canto III, vers. 82-87

Mario Lino Stancati - Vidi spenta ogni veduta
(Recorded in Cosenza, Italy. 2020)

«Ecco la fiera con la coda aguzza,
che passa i monti, e rompe i muri e l’armi!
Ecco colei che tutto ’l mondo appuzza!».
Sì cominciò lo mio duca a parlarmi;
e accennolle che venisse a proda
vicino al fin d’i passeggiati marmi.
E quella sozza imagine di froda
sen venne, e arrivò la testa e ’l busto,
ma ’n su la riva non trasse la coda.
Inferno, Canto XVII, vers. 1-9

D. Barbiero & C. Bocci - MALEBRANCHE
(Recorded in Silver Spring, US / Siena, Italy. 2020)
E vidi dietro a noi un diavol nero
con l’ali aperte e sovra i piè leggero!
Inferno, Canto XXI, vers. 29-33

Gianluca Becuzzi - Stavvi Minòs orribilmente
(Recorded in Rome, Italy. 2020)

Stavvi Minòs orribilmente, e ringhia:
essamina le colpe ne l’intrata;
giudica e manda secondo ch’avvinghia.
Dico che quando l’anima mal nata
li vien dinanzi, tutta si confessa;
e quel conoscitor de le peccata
vede qual loco d’inferno è da essa;
cignesi con la coda tante volte
quantunque gradi vuol che giù sia messa.

Inferno, Canto V, vers. 4-12

Samuel Goff – Medusa ’l Gorgón
(Recorded in Richmond, US. 2020. Featuring Twila Jane Ramblethorn, voice of Medusa. And Laura Marina, voice of The Furies)
«Vegna Medusa: sì ’l farem di smalto»,
dicevan tutte riguardando in giuso;
«mal non vengiammo in Teseo l’assalto».
«Volgiti ’n dietro e tien lo viso chiuso;
Inferno, Canto IX, vers. 52-57

Cobi van Tonder - Cerbero, fiera crudele e diversa
(Recorded in Stockholm, Sweden. 2020)
Cerbero, fiera crudele e diversa,
e ’l ventre largo, e unghiate le mani;
graffia li spirti, ed iscoia ed isquatra.
Urlar li fa la pioggia come cani;
de l’un de’ lati fanno a l’altro schermo;
volgonsi spesso i miseri profani.
Inferno, canto VI, vers. 13-21
